Almost perfect penlight (let down by unusual batte

If not for the non-standard battery size (10900 which is a pain in the arse to find a spare), this review would be be 5 stars. Though at the price the Extac guys are selling the Pen L1, you could just buy a new one if the battery dies on you early!!! 3000k warm white CRI>98 Nichia E21A is the dogs balls when it comes to emitters. Forget about how many lumens a flashlight says it emits. In situations where you want to accurately know the colour of something (say if you are a paramedic and you want to know if a patient’s skin has turned blue or not), a low CRI cool white tinted light is not what you need. Or if you’re just using this light in the dark to illuminate an area and you want to remember the colour of a door or wall, low CRI just won’t cut it. Folomov have put one of the best CRI emitters in this penlight and at this price it’s a steal. The orange peel reflector gives a very diffuse beam with the hotspot gently transitioning out into the spill (give me this beam profile over a LED Lenser any day). Modes are spaced really well and it’s great that this penlight also comes with strobe, beacon and SOS modes as well as two illumination settings (regular and tactical). As with other Folomov lights, LMHML ramping takes getting used to, but it’s a quick transition in my books. The aforementioned battery is micro USB rechargeable but you’ll have to use the micro USB port on the battery itself to recharge rather than using a standard Li-Ion battery charger. If you don’t need a bigger light but want something to carry in your shirt pocket or bag, the Pen L1 could be the right EDC light for you. All that Folomov need to do now is to let users buy additional 10900 batteries and this for me would bring this review up to five stars.
